Girls Like You

I call you as I'm walking the dog
It's 11:30 at night your time
But you always answer.
You mostly let me talk
About my latest online shopping,
The book I'm still hung up on,
What I think of the new place.
Then you tell me about your work
Your friends playing video games earlier -
Everything and nothing at once,
But it's enough just hearing your voice
How you make me laugh and smile
The way you can make anything I say
Inappropriate,
Which just makes me laugh harder
As I tell you to behave yourself.

Then I get back home
Needing to get dinner ready
So I say I'll text you later
And you tell me
You'd better hear from me before 3am
Or I'm in trouble -
You calling me
Waking me up,
Like I kept you up last night
When I forgot to text.
You tell me you had the volume up
Waking up at the slightest noise
Waiting for it to be me.
I smile
Promising to go to bed extra early,
Loving you more than I ever thought possible
Because I know you do wait,
Waiting for 10 o'clock my time
For me to crawl into bed
My phone out to text you
As I start my nightly routine.

This,
Our new routine,
It's a watered down version of us
But until we can get back in the same state
It's better than nothing.
You still manage to drive me crazy,
Wanting you
Needing you
Like the air I breathe,
As I count down to when you'll be back.

I've fallen asleep to the memory of your arms
Wrapped tight around me
Your sweater in my arms
So I can still smell you,
And woken up
Turning to face your empty pillow
More times than I can count.
Soon
You'll be back soon
And then we can reforge us
As we build our life
Together
Here.
